Fullerton, Calif. – Today, Rep. Gil Cisneros penned an op-ed in the Korea Daily announcing his endorsement of UC Irvine Professor and policy expert Dave Min in the race for State Senate District 37.
Why I’m Supporting Dave Min for California State Senate District 37
I am proud to call Dave Min my friend. Dave and I are both fathers with young children, so 2016 was a wake-up call for us. We realized we could not rely on politics as usual to change the direction of this country – that we needed to be the change we wished to see in the Orange County we both call home.
That’s how my Congressional campaign began. Ever since announcing my candidacy, I have consistently called for new leadership at all levels of our government. New leadership in our country and our party – leadership that reflects the diversity of Southern California, diversity in life experience, and diversity in expertise.
Thankfully, we saw the first part of this shift towards new leadership come with the Blue Wave of 2018, which consisted of a coalition of voters across communities coming together to call for decency and common sense in our government. The Asian Pacific Islander community was instrumental in this effort, and we as Democrats should be rightly concerned that we do not have an elected API official on the County, State or Federal level in Orange County.
Which leads me to my next point – we still haven’t done nearly enough to give diverse voices a seat at the table representing our community. Instead, we’ve seen a proliferation of out-of-touch career politicians using elected office as a step ladder to advance their own careers instead of the priorities of voters. In doing so, they shut out diverse candidates who accurately reflect the areas they are running to represent.
I would know, because I was one such candidate. I was told to “wait my turn” when I decided to run for office. Until we decide as a party to promote new voices from within our community, our promise of true representative government will ring hollow in Washington D.C. and Sacramento.
That’s why I’m so excited to support Dave’s candidacy for California’s 37th State Senate District. Dave is not a career politician – he’s an economic policy expert, law professor, husband, and father. He’s the son of first-generation immigrants and reflects the incredible diversity that Orange County has to offer. And he’s not just a fresh face– his ideas for our communities on key issues like climate change, healthcare access, and women’s rights are fresh as well. He’s spent his entire career making the economy work in the best interest of middle-class Americans, so he can be trusted to do the same for Orange County families.
As I continue my own fight to build an economy that works for middle-class families, working women and men, and all Orange County residents, I need a partner in Sacramento who knows these issues and has the intellectual ability to continue to strengthen and advance these priorities. Dave Min is that partner. I could not be prouder to endorse him.
