Cisneros Statement on Trump Administration’s ‘Zero-Tolerance’ Policy and the Separation of Children and Parents at the Border

Fullerton, Calif. – Today, Gil Cisneros, Fmr. Lieutenant Commander who is running for Congress in California’s 39th Congressional District, released the following statement on the Trump administration’s “zero-tolerance” immigration policy, leading to the separation of children from their parents at the border:

“The images and stories from the past several days of children locked in metal cages and crying out for their parents have shocked our country’s moral conscience. The Trump administration’s ‘zero-tolerance’ immigration policy is cruel, inhumane, and goes against everything our country should stand for. Instead of providing compassion and hope, the administration is stoking fear and anguish, inducing more trauma in families who are fleeing violence and persecution. When I and the thousands of our country’s veterans enlisted to serve our nation, these were not values that we chose to defend.

“The Trump administration’s policy does nothing to strengthen our border security, nor does it address any of the issues affecting our immigration system. There is no justifiable reason to rip apart these families, yet this administration refuses to accept responsibility for its decision. Meanwhile, Young Kim has refused to even acknowledge the humanitarian issue at our border. Her silence is yet another example of her anti-immigrant record, having voted against extending healthcare benefits to undocumented children and against helping DREAMers, and opposed a pathway to citizenship for undocumented immigrants.

“We need leaders in Washington who will call out the Trump administration when it acts out of line and out of step with our country’s values. In Congress, I’ll stand up for our communities and families and advocate for comprehensive immigration reform. We need to keep families together, and as both a father and an American, I demand that the President immediately rescind his heartless policy.”
